He Jiankui was a chinese biophysics reasearcher at the Southern University of Science and Technology's Department of Biology in Shenzhen, China. On the 25th of November, 2018 He Jiankui announed that his team had successfully created the worlds first gene edited human babies on youtube. This was done after a story on the experiment was published in MIT Technology Review the same day. Jiankui claimed that he had used CRISPR/Cas9 to make the babies immune to HIV. The experiment was widely condemned as irresponsible, unethical, and premature. Later review showed the editing created genes not previously seen in humans, meaning their benefits and safety were unknown. The method itself is unlikely to have conferred actual immunity due to the multiple pathways that strains of HIV use to infect cells. Jiankui was fired, fined the equivalent of $430,000, and sentanced to three years of prison.
